Description

The Mtwara area is located at the border with Mozambique on the coast of the Indian ocean and is predominantly a Makonde ethnic zone.
This cd is a compilation of 2 very different ethnic groups with radically different cultures:
- the first part is a recording of a Makonde ceremony: it is about the celebration of the end of sexual initiation of 12 years old girls being taken away for a week in a remote place before going back in their fishermen village where the party takes place. Local corn alcohol, drums and other percussions, didgeridoos and women singing for several days...
- the second part is the recording of a muslim ceremony: following muslim religious principles (namely no alcohol and sexual frenzy), around 1500 people are gathering to chant religious prayers together. Sound system, arabic style flute, percussions and a choir of young girls all dressed in white...
