The Miao is one of the most important ethnic group of China with 9 million people subcategorized in 5 groups and 38 subgroups! The musicians/singers recorded here belong to the Galao subgroup, that means bird in their language.
As for most of the major Chine ethnic groups, the tourism industry have been influencing a good part of the Miao cultural life and some famous aspect of it have been broadcasted on TV like mouth organs orchestra.
You can find on this cd some more confidential and original music, at the roots of the Miao culture, from two villages:
- Songlong village with a 2 string bowed instrument (gupiaqin) and some old women authentic singing style
- Paiya village where a Miao mouth organs maker gathered two old friends to play together...
