Description

The Krungs are a subgroup of Brao people. Half of the Braos are living in Cambodia and the other half in Laos. The term "krung" refers to a different kind of forest ; basically in the seventies, plenty of Brao people emigrated to Laos to escape the khmer rouge madness. The ones who remained in Cambodia called themselves krung. They speak the same language, they belong to the same Mon khmer family and are the first inhabitants of this area.
With other ethnic groups in the area, they share a lot musically, especially the fascination for Gong playing in animist ceremonies, but also similar bamboo instruments.
The music of Brao and Kreung people can be simply divided in two categories:
- entertainment music with bamboo instruments and singing -
ensemble of gongs for animist ceremonies.
On this cd, you can listen to both, but most of the tracks refer to a gong ensemble that was conducted by Pon Dao who died in 2006.
