Description

The majority of people living in Mondolkiri province are Phnong, related to the Mnong ethnic group on the other side of the border, in Vietnam. They belong to the Mon-khmer family and are the first inhabitants of this area. With other ethnic groups of the area, they share a lot musically, especially the fascination for gong playing during animist ceremonies.
This recording session was done in Butang village where they still have elephants.
It is the only time Leaurent Jeanneau saw people singing while playing gongs.
