Description

The majority of people living in Mondolkiri province are Phnong (35 000 people), related to the Mnong ethnic group on the other side of the border, in Vietnam. They belong to the Mon-khmer family and are the first inhabitants of this area. With other ethnic groups of the area, they share a lot musically, especially the fascination for gong playing during animist ceremonies. Nowadays they use 6 "cengs" (flat gongs) for their animist ceremonies.
This cd contains mainly vocals, performed by old people in various villages around Sen Monorom around the time of Khmer New Year (also celebrated by Phnongs). Those vocals are the expression of local oral literature and poetry.
